Happy Wednesday, Nassau County. One thing to know before you plan anything on the sand: the National Weather Service has a rip current statement up for our beaches through Thursday evening, so this is a week to look at the ocean rather than swim in it. Otherwise today is the good day. Fernandina gets to 85 with storm chances in the mid 30s, Yulee 88, Callahan 89, Hilliard 90, and by Thursday and Friday those chances climb past 60 on the mainland. Monday's forecast had today as the wet one and it moved, so take the window. Downtown, paid parking came back from the dead Tuesday night and was buried again inside 40 minutes.

Commissioner Tim Poynter, who made the motion two weeks ago to end downtown paid parking, called that vote a "knee-jerk reaction" Tuesday and asked the commission to reconsider it. The motion failed 2 to 2. Commissioner Genece Minshew, one of the program's two strongest defenders and Poynter's opponent in November's mayoral race, voted no alongside Vice Mayor Darron Ayscue: "For me, paid parking is a done issue because the community has spoken." Joyce Tuten voted with Poynter, arguing residents deserved a properly noticed agenda item rather than a decision made in opening statements; Mayor James Antun was absent with illness. The One Parking contract still ends Nov. 18, and the meters keep running until then.

The Fernandina Beach Police Department notified Flock Group on Tuesday that it is discontinuing its Flock Safety license plate readers, a day after the Florida Department of Transportation revoked permits for the cameras in state highway rights of way and gave agencies 30 days to take them down. The city went further than the order required and is ending the whole system, which it has run since 2022 and locked in under a five-year, $50,000 agreement in June 2023. Its two cameras sit at South Eighth Street and Amelia Island Parkway and at Atlantic Avenue and Eighth Street; Flock schedules the removal, and the city has not said whether it owes anything on the remaining three years. The Sheriff's Office is separately taking down 34 cameras under the state order, and Sheriff Bill Leeper said agencies have to balance the investigative value against privacy.

The first budget hearing is Thursday at 5:05 p.m. at City Hall, taking up an operating millage of 4.8530 mills against a rollback rate of 4.4425. Under Florida's Truth in Millage law that is a 9.24 percent increase, or $485.30 per $100,000 of taxable value instead of $444.25. What Tuesday night added was a list. Arguing against reviving parking, Minshew named some of what the money covers: $457,000 for city youth programs, $135,000 for a bus to serve them, and $355,000 set aside toward buying the Ybor Alvarez Sports Complex land from the FAA. She asked anyone calling for cuts to say which ones. The rate can be lowered Thursday or at final adoption on Sept. 15. It cannot be raised.

John Gilbert Sr. started America's Youth in 1998 with six kids running track outdoors because there was no room to borrow yet. He retired from running it on June 30, after his health began to decline, and he wants people to understand the organization is not closing; he is stepping back from the day to day. What he built in between is an after-school program, Camp America in the summer, a technology center open to families, and an entrepreneur course, all of it with no fee and no paid staff. About 40 children a year come through the after-school program and camp has drawn as many as 60 in a summer. Gilbert is a Fernandina Beach native, a disabled Army veteran and a Florida A&M football player who came home, and in 1989 he was the first person the city gave its Elsie Harper Volunteer of the Year award. "I had a saying: if I can save one, I think I've fulfilled my job," he told Nassau NewsLine. "I think I've saved more than one."

John Gilbert spent nearly three decades being the adult who checked whether somebody's homework got done. Most of us had one of those, and it was usually not a parent. Tuesday night a Fernandina Beach commissioner asked his colleagues to undo a vote they had already taken. Under the commission's own rules, only certain people may do that, and only at a certain moment. What are the two conditions?

Answer: it has to come at the very next meeting, and it has to come from a commissioner who voted with the winning side. Tim Poynter qualified on both counts, because he made the Aug. 19 motion to end paid parking and voted for it. Worth knowing too: even a successful vote to reconsider would not have restored the meters. It would only have put the question on a future properly noticed agenda.
