Happy Wednesday, Nassau County. One day until the parade, two until the festival, and the forecast just made things interesting. After weeks of drought and a burn ban, the rain is finally coming. The timing is, well, complicated. Let's get into it.

🌦️ Bring a Poncho: Shrimp Fest Faces Its Wettest Forecast in Years

The official Shrimp Festival site warns visitors to prepare for "typically bright, sunny, and warm" weather. This year, not so much. The current forecast shows a 65% chance of rain Thursday during the 6 PM parade, climbing to 75% on Saturday, the festival's biggest day. Friday and Sunday look like the better bets, with Sunday cooling into the upper 60s as a front pushes through. The good news: the parade rolls rain or shine, the burn ban will likely come off, and the drought finally breaks. The practical news: ponchos beat umbrellas in a parade crowd, and waterproof shoes will pay off if you're walking from a parking lot.

🛸 Drones Replace Fireworks Friday Night, Plus a Beard Contest and a Boat Blessing

News broke late Monday that the Friday night fireworks show is off. With the burn ban still active, the festival's required permit was withdrawn, so organizers swapped in a first-ever drone show over Fernandina Harbor at 9:30 PM Friday, right after the 9 PM Pirate Invasion. The Observer also published a full hour-by-hour rundown Tuesday, surfacing weekend traditions that get less attention. Saturday brings the 57th Topsy Smith Memorial Beard Contest at 12:30 PM on the Pirate Ship Stage and the Shrimp Eating Contest at 4:30 PM on the Riverfront Stage. Sunday closes the weekend with the Decorated Shrimp Boat Parade and Blessing of the Fleet at 1:15 PM at the marina, and the Ice Cream Eating Contest at 3 PM.

🎸 The Usual Suspects: The Post-Parade Tradition Worth Sticking Around For

As soon as the last float clears 8th Street Thursday, the parade crowd shifts toward the Pirate Ship Stage at the foot of Centre. That's where The Usual Suspects take over for a free, two-hour set, kicking off around 7:30 PM. They've been the post-parade band for years, playing classic rock, dance, and a little of everything else. It's the kind of low-key tradition that makes Shrimp Fest feel less like an event and more like a neighborhood block party. Bring the chair you watched the parade from, find a friend, and stay for a song.

☕ Midweek Trivia

The Shrimp Festival began in 1964. What was the original main event, no longer part of the festival today?

Answer: Shrimp boat races on the Amelia River. The festival was originally called the "Shrimp Boat Festival" and centered on the racing. The races were eventually retired as fuel and engine costs made them cost-prohibitive for working shrimpers.
