Happy Wednesday, Nassau County. The National Weather Service has an Extreme Heat Warning up until 8 o'clock tonight, with a heat index that could reach 110, and then storms likely rolling in after five. A few of them could turn severe. Do the outdoor things early, keep an eye on the sky this afternoon, and check on the neighbors who do not have good air conditioning. Here is what is worth knowing at midweek.

📰	What You Need to Know

City commissioners voted 4 to 1 Tuesday night to set the tentative property tax rate at 4.8530 mills, the highest of the four options staff put in front of them. That is a ceiling, not the final bill. Commissioners can come down during September budget hearings, but they cannot go back up. City Manager Sarah Campbell had recommended 4.5444 mills, a 3 percent cut from the current rate, and her budget balances there; the higher number would raise about $1.5 million more, which is precisely the amount of paid parking revenue the city has already committed to the marina redevelopment. Vice Mayor Darron Ayscue cast the lone no vote, and commissioners noted they made the call before seeing Campbell's proposed budget, which is due Friday.

Three weeks out from the August 18 vote, the city has given its clearest answer yet on what a yes actually does. City Manager Sarah Campbell and City Attorney Teresa Prince say the referendum is not retroactive, so it would apply to any future attempt to bring paid parking to other parts of town, not to the program already running downtown. That program would stay in place unless commissioners separately voted to repeal it. Prince said the same thing back in October 2025, before enforcement ever started. The city's written answer used the words "we believe," which stops short of a formal legal opinion or anything a court has settled, so file it as the administration's read rather than the last word.

Cornerstone Classical Academy turned dirt Thursday morning on its Wildlight campus, the first charter school in Nassau County. The Jacksonville school is planning a fall 2027 opening, starting with VPK through sixth grade and adding a grade each year until it reaches twelfth. Enrollment opens in December. Auld & White Constructors is building it with Rowe Architects, on land in Rayonier's fast-growing Yulee community, where new rooftops have been arriving faster than classrooms for a few years now.

🌟	Community Spotlight

Emily Floore has run St. Marys Riverkeeper since 2022, and her crew samples more than 50 sites across the watershed, from the headwaters in the Okefenokee all the way to where the river meets the Atlantic between Cumberland Island and Fort Clinch. Here on the island that means Egans Creek, Escambia Slough, Jackson Creek, and several public boat ramps. They recently added enterococcus testing at the mouth of Egans Creek, which is the better indicator in saltier water, and ran DNA sampling to try to trace where the bacteria are coming from. Floore is careful about that last part. Failing septic systems are one possible source, she says, but so are leaking sewer lines, pets, and stormwater, and more sampling is needed before anyone names a culprit. Much of the work gets done by trained volunteers, which is a nice thing to know the next time you are standing on a dock wondering about the water.

➤	Chick-fil-A's Yulee move is finished. The 22-year-old store on SR-200 near the Walmart served its last waffle fries July 8, and the replacement is open a mile down the road in the Villages of Amelia center, a 5,201 square foot building with a double drive-thru and 94 seats inside. (More)

➤	Florida's back-to-school sales tax holiday runs through August 20, which covers most of the shopping between now and the first day of school. Clothes and shoes $100 or less, school supplies $50 or less, and computers $1,500 or less come off the tax rolls. (More)

➤	Work on the $12.58 million marina rebuild is expected to start in mid-August, with Brett's Waterway Cafe coming down before the year ends. If you keep a boat there or run a business on Front Street, the city is posting schedule and access updates as they firm up. (More)

Amelia Island is named after a British princess, courtesy of a general who was busy pressing English claims south from Georgia. Who was she?

Answer: Princess Amelia, the second daughter of King George II. James Oglethorpe, the general who founded the Georgia colony, named the island for her in 1735 while the border with Spanish Florida was still very much in dispute. Spain had called it Isla de Santa Maria for well over a century, but Oglethorpe's choice is the one that stuck.
