Commissioner Tim Poynter officially filed Tuesday morning to run for mayor in the 2026 election cycle, setting up a contested race against Commissioner Genece Minshew, who entered the race late last week. Both commissioners survived the recent recall effort tied to their votes for paid parking, which a Nassau County judge blocked from reaching the ballot. Under the city charter, the mayor is elected at-large from among sitting commissioners not up for reelection, leaving Joyce Tuten as the only other commissioner who could still file. The qualifying period runs May 11 through May 15.

Leave a bag of non-perishable food next to your mailbox before your letter carrier comes by, and they take it from there. Donations go directly to local food pantries. Since launching in 1993, the nationwide drive has collected more than 1.94 billion pounds of food. Canned goods, peanut butter, pasta, rice, cereal, shelf-stable milk, and baby food are all welcome.

When Chief Haynes Cavender's lifeguards walk up to a family at Main Beach, they are usually pointing out a rip current rather than pulling someone out of one. Fernandina Beach Ocean Rescue logged 52 water rescues in 2025, up just 4 percent, but preventative interactions jumped 52 percent and rule enforcement rose 43 percent, all by design. "We're the face of public safety on the beach," Cavender, who has been a Fernandina lifeguard since age 16, told the Observer. "Our big goal is prevention, and that is done through education." His team just wrapped final tryouts and added two full-time positions last year. Candidates have to swim 500 meters in under 10 minutes, then complete an 80-hour academy. Towers go up at 10:15 a.m., and the Opening of the Beaches at Main Beach Park on May 16 marks the official summer kickoff.
