Timoti's Seafood Shak: A Downtown Classic for a Sandy Saturday

If you're coming off the beach on Saturday looking for lunch, Timoti's is the call. Tucked a half-block off Centre Street, it's a walk-up counter with covered picnic tables out back and a little playground so kids can blow off steam while you eat. Everything's wild-caught and local where it can be. Get the shrimp tacos, or the Baja Box if you want the best value on the menu, and save room for a slice of key lime pie. It's casual, fast, and the kind of place where sandy feet are very much on theme.

📍 21 N 3rd St, Fernandina Beach • Mon–Sat 11 AM–8 PM, Sun 11 AM–3 PM • timotis.com

Burn Ban and State of Emergency in Effect This Weekend

On Wednesday, the Nassau County Board of County Commissioners declared a Local State of Emergency and approved a countywide burn ban, citing dry conditions and brush fire risk. Fire Chief Brady Rigdon told commissioners there's no significant rain forecast for at least two weeks, and the dry front moving through this weekend will drop humidity further. All outdoor burning is prohibited except permitted burns from the Florida Forest Service. Grilling on attended barbecue equipment is fine. The ban runs through at least April 22, when commissioners will decide whether to extend it. Phase II water restrictions also remain in effect: irrigation is limited to one day per week, odd addresses on Saturdays and even addresses on Sundays.

Hundreds Turn Out for Waterfront Park Grand Opening

After nearly a century of debates, designs, and commission considerations, the Amelia River Waterfront Park officially opened Saturday, April 11 at 251 S Front Street. City staff estimated a few hundred people came downtown between 2 and 4 PM for a celebration that included pirates, music from the Honey Badgers, and a visit from Rep. Aaron Bean. The $2.4 million park is the new home of the Shrimp Festival Kids Zone in two weeks, and it adds a waterfront gathering space the city has wanted for generations.

☕ Weekend Trivia

Amelia Island is famously known as the "Isle of Eight Flags." Over the centuries, how many different nations' flags have flown over the island?

Answer: Eight. It's the only location in the U.S. to have flown under eight different national flags: France, Spain, Great Britain, the Patriots of Amelia Island, the Green Cross of Florida, Mexico, the Confederacy, and the United States.
