If you have somehow not been, this is the one to fix this weekend. It is a working Gulf gas station on South 8th that also happens to serve some of the best breakfast and burgers on the island, and locals have voted with their feet for years. Get there early on Saturday (they open at 8) and order the breakfast biscuit or, later, a Super Cheeseburger that does not photograph well but eats like a dream. Cash-friendly, no frills, and exactly the kind of unpretentious island spot worth beating the heat for. Closed Sunday, so make it your Saturday plan.
📍 202 S. 8th Street • Mon–Fri 7 AM–2 PM, Sat 8 AM–1 PM • Breakfast until 10:30

Ocean Highway and Port Authority commissioners are divided over a 0.82-acre riverfront parcel the authority has owned, undeveloped, since 1989. Vice Chairman Scott Moore wants to study developing it to diversify the financially struggling port's income rather than leaning entirely on lease revenue. Chairman Ray Nelson argues the land already earns its keep as surge parking and flood-event storage. The board voted 2-1 to apply for a $100,000 USDA grant to fund a 12-month feasibility study.

It is a small, free, browse-on-your-own celebration of the design and illustration that goes into the covers we judge books by. A nice, cool, no-cost stop if the afternoon storms chase you indoors this weekend.

- The city's e-bike ordinance gets its second and final reading Tuesday, June 16. If adopted, the speed limits (10 mph on sidewalks and trails, 20 mph on roads) take effect immediately.
- The renovated Publix at Island Walk is three weeks out from its July 2 reopening, bringing back the south end's second grocery anchor with a wine bar, pizza oven, and burrito bowls.
- Save the date: the Amelia Island Skate & Surf Film Festival takes over downtown next Saturday, June 20, from 1 to 9 PM.
- It is a hot one: heat index up to 102 on Saturday and afternoon storm chances climbing into Sunday. Drink water, check the beach flags, and keep an eye on the radar after lunch.
When the afternoons get this hot, the morning becomes the main event. What is your perfect early-summer-Saturday ritual before the heat takes over: a sunrise beach walk, a market run, a quiet coffee, an early paddle? Hit reply and let us know. We read every response.
Fernandina Beach is nicknamed the "Isle of Eight Flags" because eight different national flags have flown over the area through its history. Can you name three of the eight?
Answer: French, Spanish, British, Patriots of Amelia Island, Green Cross of Florida, Mexican (Republic of the Floridas), Confederate, and United States.
