Happy Shrimp Fest Friday, Nassau County. The 61st Isle of Eight Flags Shrimp Festival officially opens this afternoon, and tonight Fernandina makes a little history of its own: the first-ever drone show in place of fireworks. Below, your hour-by-hour playbook for the weekend, the smartest parking move you'll make all month, and a few things you might want to know about the air you've been breathing.

Sunshine and warm breezes today and into Saturday morning. Saturday afternoon could throw a few thunderstorms as a front edges in (high near 87°), so pack a light layer if you're staying late. Sunday turns wetter with showers and possible evening thunder. Air quality has cleared back to "Good" after weeks in the orange. The county burn ban remains in effect.

Park & Ride from FBHS Is the Move

If you're heading downtown anytime Saturday, for the festival, for lunch, for any reason at all, do yourself the favor: park at Fernandina Beach High School ($15) and ride the free shuttle. Saturday hours run 8:30 AM to 8:30 PM. The fee goes to the school as a donation. Trying to find a free spot anywhere within a mile of Centre Street on a Saturday afternoon during Shrimp Fest is how vacations end with someone in tears in a hot car. The other official option is Park & Walk at Buccaneer Field ($20, proceeds to local charities). Either beats circling.

📍 FBHS • 435 Citrona Drive • Shuttle Fri 5–11 PM, Sat 8:30 AM–8:30 PM, Sun 9:30 AM–6 PM • Parking map →

🌬️ Air Quality Has Finally Cleared

After several weeks in the orange zone with smoke drifting from the Railroad Fire and other regional blazes, Nassau County's air quality has cleared back to "Good" per IQAir's monitoring. It's the first sustained green readout in nearly a month, and welcome news for anyone planning to spend the weekend outside. The county's burn ban remains in effect, extended at the April 22 BOCC special meeting and confirmed again on April 27. Translation: outdoor air is fine for the festival, but no backyard burns yet.

🎭 'Grease' Opens at Amelia Musical Playhouse Next Thursday

Save-the-date for the post-Shrimp-Fest week: Amelia Musical Playhouse opens its run of "Grease" on Thursday, May 7, running through May 24. Classic Rydell High story, the Pink Ladies, the Burger Palace Boys, and the kind of high-energy musical that's an easy crowd-pleaser. Worth a look for next weekend when the island goes back to quiet.
