If you haven't made it to Kitchen 251 yet, a rainy weekend morning is your sign. Chef Michael McCarroll opened at the former Beech Street Grill space back in January, and the South Louisiana-influenced menu has been quietly winning people over. Think down-home comfort food in a room with genuine historic charm, blackboard specials that rotate, and a full bar. It's the kind of place where the food is unpretentious and the room feels like it's been there forever. Good fit for a Saturday lunch before the storms arrive, or a Mother's Day meal if your mom likes things a little more laid-back than white-tablecloth.
📍 801 Beech Street, downtown Fernandina Beach • Tue-Sat, 11 AM-8 PM • 904.261.7447 • kitchen251.com

The city's paid parking program netted Fernandina Beach $136,000 in April alone, pushing the total net revenue since the February launch past $201,000, according to a report presented to the City Commission Tuesday. April was the program's strongest month for hourly transactions, running well ahead of March's pace despite the suspension of paid parking during Shrimp Festival weekend. With the August 18 ballot referendum on the program approaching, each monthly report is adding to the picture voters will weigh. Commissioner Tim Poynter, who filed for mayor this week, and Commissioner Genece Minshew both voted for the program.

During the May 1 parade, the cannon expelled flaming wadding that caught the wind and burned a child on his chest, neck, and finger, while sitting among other young children off of centre street. Festival chairman Scott Inglis announced the ban at the May 5 City Commission meeting after Commissioner Genece Minshew raised the issue. Festival organizers are also looking at restricting all cannon fire to the Fernandina Beach Pirates Club, which uses a different, wadding-free method.

A second hearing is set for June 8. The moratorium would pause new applications while the county develops land-use rules around groundwater use, utility capacity, and environmental impact. No applications are currently pending, but commissioners want a policy framework in place before one arrives. Monday is the chance for residents to weigh in.
